An impulse made me look out my front door around 10am this morning and I was startled to see a great blue heron rising to take flight from up in a maple tree about 50 feet away. It must have seen me looking out before I spotted it. I later saw presumably the same bird on the shore behind the local post office, but again it took off as I watched. A new yard bird for me!
