To Jim W. et al,
it seems to me that Eelgrass cannot tolerate much silt in the water, =
even though it --paradoxically-- needs silty and shallow sea bottom to =
root in. Do we know whether the N.S. Eelgrass beds ever fully recovered =
after being nearly wiped out by the Eelgrass Wasting Disease in the =
1930's or so? That's when the Eelgrass Limpet (Lottia alveus) became =
extinct.
On a much happier note, I am seeing much more Eelgrass in sheltered =
and shallow parts of Halifax Harbour now that Haligonians treat much of =
their sewage...

my memory re eelgrass?
Cheers from Jim in Wolfville.

Hi Paul and all
I think something must have changed to alter the migration passage =
of Brant in the last 25 years- maybe the eelgrass or whatever Brant feed =
on during migration.=20
Holdway in his 10 year study of Pictou Co. birds from 1957-1966 =
also lists it as a common spring migrant especially in the month of =
April but also from 6 other months. In my birding in the county over the =
last 25 years of so, I have only seen a handful and others hvae also =
only seen a few. The Ponds at Merigomish are often checked and they have =
been noted a few times at Big I.=20
Interesting the East River at New Glasgow was the sighting of a =
White-fronted Goose on the Springville Christmas bird count last Dec. =
and I check this area frequently. Good to have you comments once again =
Paul. We missed them.=20
cheers

Hi Ken=20
When I lived in Pictou Co ( 1970-73 ), Brant were fairly =
common in the spring. The East River below New Glasgow was a good spot. =
It was easier to hear them than see them. Also down at the Ponds in =
Merigomish they would stay til June. I haven't visited there in many =
years so I don't know if this still applies.
It might be good to check at the Ponds mid May however.
Paul

Hi all
Rick Ferguson and I observed a single Brant Goose at =
Waterside PP, Pictou Co. late this morning, April 9. =20
Although not a rare bird in Shelburne Co. it is not common =
in Pictou Co
We did not observe any Osprey yet around many of the 2010 =
nests or in Pictou Harbour and the 3 rivers entering into the harbour. =
The Glaucous Gull at Pier C in Pictou seen the last several weekends was =
not seen on 2 trips there today.=20
There were several good clumps of Coltsfoot in bloom in =
the Abercrombie Pt. area and there has been a good clump behind the New =
Glasgow Walmart for at least 9 days now. and Rick briefly saw a small =
orangish butterfly near the New Glasgow sewer.=20
cheers
Ken
