APRIL 7, 2011 - Several dandelion flower-heads next to buildings on
Wolfville's downtown Main St.. These would have been fresh quite a
while ago.

Much fresher are the now-open red? maple catkins on the planted small
trees along the sidewalk of Main St. Another and bigger red maple by
the Acadia Arena parking lot still has unopened, swollen buds.

I also saw a single active (not very) Polistes paper wasp in
Wolfville on the wall of a residential house.

APRIL 9, 2011 - Gorgeous Sunny and warm day, up to 10-12 C. in
Wolfville area, with slight to no wind. Lots of open crocuses of
various colours and attended by lots of honey bees. Along
Wolfville's Skyway Drive, oodles of flower-heads of coltsfoot very
showy.

Along the northeast end of Oak Ave. in Wolfville, Daphne bushes show
some colour as the flower-buds are opening.

I noticed a particular crow behaviour that I have seen a few times
this Spring. In flight one will briefly go into a soaring posture
with the wings up in a "V" like a small turkey vulture. I have lost
my 3-volume field guide to bird behaviour by Stokes. Does anyone
know if this brief glide signals something in crows?

Saxon St. Pond: 12+ green-winged teals, 2 mallards.

Canard Pond: 1 f. or imm. common merganser, 6 green-winged teals, 2
mallards, 1 black duck.

Port Williams sewage ponds: 2 prs. of mallards, 2 red-tailed hawks, 2
male red-winged blackbirds.

APRIL 10, 2011 - Another beautiful warm & Sunny day, with light to no
wind. I saw a mourning cloak butterfly at home in Wolfville, and
lots of other active insects.

APRIL 12, 2011 - At my feeders there is another? fox sparrow this
morning.

Along the Wolfville Rail Trail a willow species now has its "pussies"
open to reveal open male catkins.

Brenda Thexton reports having a single male evening grosbeak at
feeders in east Wolfville on April 8 and 11. And on Apr. 9, Brenda &
Bill Thexton saw 11 harlequin ducks and a single black scoter at Port
George.

Cheers from Jim in Wolfville.
