16 April 2011

Ian McLaren and I spent much of Saturday exploring the shoreline of
western St. Margaret's Bay, as well as Mahone Bay. We started at
Head of St. Margarets, travelled Hwy 3 to Hubbards, drove around the
Aspotogan Peninsula, and then went along the shore of Mahone Bay as
far as Second Peninsula. The land birding was very quiet, but there
were moments of interest along the coast. We also undertook some
retail therapy at the "For The Birds" store in Mahone Bay.

Highlights:

1) - At "The Bubble", a cove on the south shore of St. Margarets Bay,
that lies between Cleveland Point to the west and Black Point to the
east, we saw:

13 Horned Grebes
4 Red-necked Grebes
30 Long-tailed Ducks
17 Red-breasted Mergansers

2) - Bayswater Beach Provincial Park

7 Red-necked Grebes
10 Surf Scoters
8 White-winged Scoters
8 Long-tailed Ducks
15 Red-breasted Mergansers

3) - Graves Island Provincial Park

55 Horned Grebes (mostly in four groups)
3 Red-necked Grebes
27 Bufflehead

Either there was a movement of grebes, or locally wintering grebes
were gathering in flocks in preparation for migration.

The waters off Second Peninsula were fairly quiet, though I saw my
first Great Blue Heron of the year.

Enjoy the spring,

Blake
