Hi folks,

Thanks, Jim, for bringing this to the list!

some more information from DNR here:
http://www.gov.ns.ca/news/details.asp?id=3D20110418001

Dave, you make some good points, and I agree that "blanket" closures may no=
t
necessarily be appropriate, or even effective, in the long-term. (but they
could...)

Bat Conservation International has some good information on the syndrome, a=
n
FAQ, and map of geographic distribution of reports to date (
http://www.batcon.org/index.php/what-we-do/white-nose-syndrome/subcategory/=
intro.html).
The BCI director seems to support "targeted" closures as opposed to
"blanket" closures. BCI also suggests that the primary pathway is
bat-to-bat, but there have in fact been incidental reports of human
transmission of the fungus from cave to cave.

At this point, when so little is known about the introduction and spread of
the fungus, and about the current geographic distribution of affected
bats/caves in Nova Scotia, I don't see any other possible real-time method
of reducing risk to NS bat populations. Especially if there is a possibilit=
y
that the initial introduction to a cave (which then, as you say Dave, could
spread among a colony like wildfire) could in theory be from a single (or
very few) individual(s) (bat or human).

As a birder (maybe more close to home for many on the list), if a similar
situation arose (rapidly-spreading, population-decimating disease), I would
expect and hope that 'those that had influence' would do the same (keep us
away from the nesting grounds, close that area of the park etc.) until the
human-vector hypothesis was ruled out. The potential consequence of being
wrong would seem too large.

Can any BAT FOLKS contribute to the discussion here?

All the best,
James
