Checked out some of the ponds around eastern Kings this afternoon.

Starting off in Coldbrook, a Little Brown Bat fluttered around our
vehicle. Probably at this time of year all the flying insects are at
a low level (sunny, 10-11C).

Canard Pond held ~15 Pintail, 20 Wigeon, 10+ Green-winged teal (no
Blue-winged), a few Mallards & Blacks. There were other waterfowl in
the back marsh but impossible to id due to the heat haze. The most
interesting wildlife there was about 200 gulls, 90% of them Great
Black-backed!! Most unusual in these parts as the numbers usually
highly favor Herring.. There were two Iceland Gulls though.

Checked out Harris' Pond (nesting Geese but nothing else....) Before
one of the landowners dammed the outlet & raised the water level
considerably this used to be a prime spot for dabblers & other ducks.
Too bad for the waterfowl and us watchers!! Nothing at the spots on
the Habitant R. along the village of Canning. The Ducks Unlimited
pond at Starrs Point only held a few Mallards. Did not get to the
Saxon St. pond. The access to the Port Williams Sewage Ponds was
blocked by construction....not sure what they're doing there. Anyone
know?? Hope it's completed before next Saturday's field trip!!
Angus
