Hi all

Spring would not be right without the arrival of Chimney Swifts to the Temperance St. school in New Glasgow. I observed 4 enter the chimney Wed. night (May 4) between 8:10-8:20 p.m. Since they entered about a minute after I arrived, I am not certain if there were more before that time.

Tonight (May 5). 2 entered between 7:58-8:20 p.m. A puff of smoke came from the chimney at 8:09. I did not see any more Swifts enter the chimney before I left.

This might be a good time also to talk about the out-of-Halifax meeting of the Nova Scotia Bird Society. It will be held on Sat. evening May 28, in New Glasgow, at Temperance St. school ( probably 7 p.m.-but subject to change). No great surprise, the topic will centre on Chimney Swifts with the Temperance St. school being one of the largest roosting sites in the Maritimes and the last week of May-first week of June traditionally bringing the largest number of birds to the chimney ranging 300-500 birds- a real nature spectacle.

The line-up of speakers will include a talk on life history and migration of Chimney Swift ( Karen Potter- Canadian Wildlife Services); local data summary gathered over the past 5 years at the school (Ken McKenna- Pictou Co. Naturalists);and introduction of brand new program to help bring together all who have been independently monitoring swifts at Maritime roosts- Swiftwatch (Ally Manthorne-Bird Studies Canada).

Stay tuned for more specifics as there will be a Sat. afternoon birding field trip to local sites and another field trip on Sunday morning to identify local breeding birds from a variety of habitats.

cheers

ken
