Flying squirrels may be =20 sensitive to fragmentation and good indicators of landscape =20 connectivity, because they need mature trees to climb for gliding and =20= to sleep in during the day. To understand the connectivity =20 requirements of flying squirrels in Nova Scotia, local life history =20 data are required to determine how long they live, how many young they =20= have, and how they disperse. With this project, live-trapping, passive =20= integrated transponder (PIT) tags, and nest boxes were used to collect =20= life history data for flying squirrels. PIT tags are small glass =20 microchips that are inserted under an animal=92s skin and that provide =20= the time, date, and unique code for the animal when they pass through =20= a circular antenna. Rachel Thibodeau grew up in Montr=E9al, Qu=E9bec, and her first language = =20 is French. When she was young she liked to go outside the city and =20 play in the forest. She studied for three years in a program called =20 techniques in applied ecology at the C=C9GEP of Sherbrooke, where she =20= graduated in 2009. In school, she had a chance to work with birds, =20 fish, plants, reptiles, amphibians, and small mammals. She had to do =20 an internship, so she decided to come to Nova Scotia to work on the =20 ribbon snakes and Blanding=92s turtles (it is here she really started to = =20 talk in English). She enjoyed it so much that she decided to return =20 and is living here now. She worked all last winter monitoring the =20 flying squirrels.
