JUNE 1, 2011 - We counted 95 chimney swifts in a pretty good "show"
at dusk at Robie Tufts Nature Centre in Wolfville. Observations from
8:33 to 9:25 p.m. (Sunset 8:51 in Herald).

Temp. 19 C., coolish and windy, sky mostly overcast with variable
bright spots and large threatening black clouds.

Tonight was a "good show" in the sense that the swifts were making
low passes past the chimney in nice formations for a long time before
"deciding" to drop in. This is in contrast to those boring evenings
when all the pre-roosting flying about is very high and out of good
visual range, and then the chimney entries can be quite abrupt
without preliminaries.

First swifts entered chimney at 9:05 (first 1, then 14 more a minute
later), and most of the others dropped in at 9:09-9:10. Estimates of
total numbers tonight were 91 and 100 swifts.

Observers were Penny Burrell, Joan & Roger Boutilier, and Jim Wolford
(and a couple others). This was an Acadia Lifelong Learning event.

JUNE 2, 2011 - 82+ chimney swifts counted as they entered the chimney
of Wolfville's Robie Tufts Nature Centre at dusk.

Observations were from 8:35 to 9:25 p.m. (Sunset in Herald was
8:52). Conditions cool, 18 C., windy, very slight drizzle at start,
sky 90% cloudy & 10% clear (after mostly Sunny & humid day).

Swifts' entries into the chimney began at 9:05 like last night, and
nearly all swifts were inside by 9:07, with stragglers until 9:23.
One more swift was heard at 9:30 when I was departing. Tonight's
"show" was considerably shorter than last night's, but basically at
the same times and with pretty good visibility.

At 9:07 we compared several estimates, which varied from 65 to 88
swifts; adding stragglers and taking an average gave a total of 82+
swifts.

Observers tonight included many of the Board of Directors of the
Blomidon Naturalists Society: Rick Whitman, Helen Archibald, John
Belbin, Ed Sulis, Barry Yoell, Murray Colbo. Other counters were
Heather & Derek Watts and Jim Wolford, and Greg Pace at the very end.

Cheers from Jim in Wolfville
