Hi all,
In Oxford, NS last night (June 2) I had a total swift count of zero. Howeve=
r, just after I got to the site (8:34) I heard and saw two swifts flying to=
gether in close formation. Those birds disappeared, leaving me alone with a=
skunk that trundled around the lawn digging up grubs. At 8:51, a single sw=
ift appeared suddenly and entered the chimney silently, pausing only briefl=
y at the entrance before diving in. At 8:57 a swift (quite possibly the sam=
e one) popped out of the chimney, just as quietly. One minute later, anothe=
r swift entered the chimney (same one?). Finally, at 9:04 one more quick an=
d silent exit. At this point I was wondering if maybe the exits were actual=
ly bats, since there were also bats leaving the house beside the roost site=
. However, the bats I saw were all vocalizing as they landed and took off f=
rom the house roof, and flying quite low around the yard. I stayed until 9:=
30 when it grew too dark to see. The neighbours told me that on June 1, two=
swifts entered the chimney and were not seen to exit, so I assume they sta=
yed the night. So, we could be looking at a nest site.

Of note, no Common Nighthawks heard displaying this time, but Veery, Gray C=
atbird, and American Robin were singing past dark, and hummingbirds were zi=
pping around most of the evening. The bats must have noticed the cloud of m=
osquitoes and black flies above my head and made many close passes, keeping=
me bugbite-free for the evening. All in all a rather pleasant watch.

Ally

Hi all
There were 271 Chimney Swifts observed entering the Temperance St. school c=
himney on June 2. Observation time was 8:42- 9:28. Swifts started a few at =
a time 8:52, but most entered 8:58 with stargglers to 9:13.
It had rained ealier in the evening and mabe some had entered prior to my a=
rrival?? Total 272 was much lower than previous night.
There were about 7 observers.
cheers
Ken
