Observations from 8:45 to 9:40 p.m. (Sunset 8:57 (Herald) or 9:00 (table for 45 degrees north)). Sky clear, bright, light breeze, cool, 14 C., with bright waxing quarter Moon high in south. Nice fairly low fly-passes by variable numbers of swifts over a long period, and entries into chimney quite gradual so counting was pretty easy. - 9:13 p.m. : first 4 swifts into chimney - 9:19 to 9:20 : 68 more in - 9:24 : 8 more in - 9:25 : 2 more in - 9:26 : 1 more in - 9:27 : 2 more in - 9:29 : 2 more in - 9:30 : 5 more in - 9:33 : 5 more in - 9:35 : 1 more in - 9:37 : 3 more in -------------------------- - TOTAL OF 101+ counted by myself; BUT two of the other observers counted about 15 more swifts than I did; thus I added 8 more swifts for an average of two counts totalling 109+ chimney swifts. This total tonight is a bit heartening, since it ties or beats all Wolfville counts for the past 4 or 5 swifts seasons, whereas the Canadian population of chimney swifts has been steeply declining over 40 years of breeding bird surveys by 8% per year. Do the math by starting with 100 or 1000 swifts and take away 8% forty times and see how many birds are left [very few!]. - OBSERVERS were Freda & Peter ?, Anneka & Luc ?, and Jim Wolford.
