On Sunday, while biking the Harbourfront Trail with a friend, I =
noticed some Greater Black-Backed Gulls in the little estuary of the =
stream near Dartmouth Cove. Since the presence of these gulls often =
means that there are fish around, usually in the deep pool at the outlet =
of the long Alderney Drive culvert, attempting to migrate upstream.
There were probably several hundred gaspereau (?) in the pool, =
milling around, reluctant to move upstream through the dark culvert =
towards the Sullivans Pond dam. Suddenly we saw a mink made an =
appearance. It dove into the pool, creating a great disturbance among =
the fish. It took maybe twenty seconds before it captured one. The mink =
crawled ashore, holding the flapping fish by its tail. It wasn't much =
shorter than the mink itself.=20
Once ashore, the mink changed its grip and bit the fish behind its =
head, killing it. It then dragged it along the rocky seawall of the =
stream towards the visitors' centre, where it may have a den. All this =
took place only a few yards from a group of bystanders. Human and gull.
