This evening I wasn't going to check on the Nature Centre swifts because it was totally overcast and rainy, cool, and windy. But just by chance I heard and then saw 6 swifts drop in at 8:35 p.m. Then I missed 10 minutes but saw a flock of 20+ flying toward the chimney as I walked in town nearby. Then my continuous vigil went from 8:45 to 9:10 p.m. (Sunset was 9:00). Sky totally overcast (we've had rainy overcast now for about three straight days), quite cool at 12 C. with a stiff wind from the north, and light rain. A bit of Sunset colours perhaps showed promise of changing weather? Entries of the swifts tonight were very gradual and in small groups that were easy to count, so my total count of 117 was fairly accurate but quite minimal, since I must have missed some swifts and possibly dozens? Times and numbers written down were 8:35 (6), 8:45 (25), 8:47 (13), 8:50 (18), 8:53 (1+4+6+10), 8:56 (2+2+3+4+7), 8:58 (2), 9:00 (4), 9:02 (2+2), and 9:04 (6). I finished watching at 9:10.
