Hi Darrell,

This is a sowbug (a.k.a., pillbug or woodlouse), a perfectly harmless  
and very common arthropod that it is ubiquitous throughout the  
Maritimes:

They are not insects (which always have six legs) but are actually  
crustaceans in the order Isopoda. Most isopods are marine, but this  
group has become terrestrial It looks a lot like the common introduced  
European species, Oniscus asellus:
