JULY 8, 2011 - This morning a gray catbird was giving alarm calls in
our yard while I was hanging laundry. This is the third summer in a
row with catbirds in our yard in Summer.

A couple of evenings ago Pat & I heard a singling n. cardinal and
then saw 3 cardinals land in our Russian olive tree, and without
binoculars I believe we saw an adult female, a fully-fledged
juvenile, and an adult male. We don't have active bird feeders now
for the summer, so I am missing seeing the cardinals coming and going.

Under the pavilion of Wolfville's Robie Tufts Nature Centre (swifts'
chimney etc.) is a nest of rock pigeons containing 2 huge fully-grown-
and-feathered-but-still-ugly fledglings which are likely to fly at
any time. While Lauren Park and I watched from a distance of only
2-5 metres from the nest, an adult landed there, and it took awhile
but the adult fed the youngsters one at a time -- each youngster had
to basically attack the adult and then stick its head into the crop
area of the adult's forced-open mouth to get the unique "pigeon milk"
that the crop secretes. The adult was in no hurry to feed them, and
I was worried that the second youngster was not going to get
anything, but I needn't have worried. Also a second adult (other
parent of the two young?) has started another nest just a metre of so
from the first nest.

JULY 11, 2011 - Since July 8 there has been at least one gray catbird
in our yard giving alarm calls often, perhaps indicating nesting? I
saw the catbird today, when it answered my amateurish pishing. This
makes three summers in a row for this catbird phenomenon in our dense
back shrubs.

JULY 12, 2011 - At the Robie Tufts Nature Centre in Wolfville, the
pigeon nest still contains two huge fledgling rock pigeons -- I don't
know whether they have taken flights and then returned to the nest
for feeding?? Perhaps young pigeons are very difficult to wean and
to leave the nest? And just one metre west of that nest is an adult
rock pigeon on a nest and apparently incubating eggs? This nest came
just as those two youngsters reached nearly full size, and my guess
is that the incubating pigeon now is the mother or father of the
fledglings?

Cheers from Jim in Wolfville
