Andy is correct that herons are opportunists, like many other
predators, going after whatever is available as fare, from various-
sized mammals, alive or dead, down through the other vertebrate and
invertebrate groups and in a variety of habitats. This reminds me of
what Mark Elderkin and Bernard Forsythe found out about the diverse
food habits of barred owls in King's County nest-boxes back in the
1980s (foods were from earthworms and beetles up through fishes,
frogs and salamanders, various birds, and various mammals, including
two kinds of flying squirrels). Cheers from Jim in Wolfville.
