AUGUST 12, 2011 - Daytime high tide 12:21 p.m. (amplitude 10.9
metres, another relatively low high). I arrived at the Evangeline
Beach canteen/motel area 1.5 hrs. before high tide (BHT). I was
hoping for a show of flying and roosting shorebirds there, but I was
either too late or in the wrong place or both. There were no peeps
to be seen at all.

I checked on the eastern end of the beach at two places: there were
none to be seen from Jean Merks' home; and at The Guzzle at the far
east end of Long Island, only a few small flying flocks and less than
100 peeps were seen, plus the usual approximately 8 fishers for
striped bass (one small one was caught while I was there). Three
identified peeps were least sandpipers. Also present were a few
juvenile gulls, mostly great black-backed.

Also at The Guzzle I saw only 4 total butterflies, all different but
only 1 of each: cabbage white, clouded or common sulfur, common wood
nymph, and a black swallowtail. Also present and common were
"Carolina locust" grasshoppers (large and noisy when they fly).

Sheila McCurdy and others were just launching a kayak to go to Boot
Island at high tide, and she promised a report about birds seen there.

Back to Wolfville for a walk on the main dyke toward Grand Pre at
high tide. In Wolfville Harbour roosting on the rocks along the
railroad tracks were 3 willets and 15 greater yellowlegs. I walked
out to the Wolfville sewage ponds, where I saw a single black-bellied
plover and a single peep on the shore rocks.

Along the main dyke were just a few more butterflies: just one or two
each of cabbage whites and clouded sulfurs, and a single larger
butterfly that showed some orange (perhaps one of the ladies?).

Cheers from Jim in Wolfville.
