Hi All
Last evening been so pleasant a friend and I done a tour of a small lake.
The wind went down with the sun and when the water got calm=2C
young alewives or gaspereaux if you wish were all over the surface
of the lake - it looked like rain so many were feeding on top of the water.
Smallmouth Bass had been introduced into this lake many years ago and
the population of both seemed healthy. Perch especially white are very
plentiful in the lake also and there are a scattered yellow.
A pair of Loons were raising a half grown chick and spent most of the eveni=
ng
on the surface - a sure sign of good fishing! They are quite interested in =
happenings
on the lake and come over to see what we were about.
One bass we caught was 45 cms and worth a picture - for those not familiar =
with=20
handling these fish=2C simply put your thumb in its mouth and your fingers =
below=20
the throat. The fish become quite docile and is easy to hold. The heart bea=
t
or pulse can be felt by the fingers below the throat. It's rate is slow - p=
erhaps 1 to 4
as compared to our own but very strong. After releasing the fish=2C your th=
umb will smell
essence de bass you could call it. There is quite a variation in the smell =
- from rancid
to almost sweet - probably has to do with the diet.
Other things of interest were a small group of swallows feeding at one spot=
 on
the lake=2C an osprey and a kingfisher enjoy the feast from the sea.
As we were leaving a pair of Barred Owl started a conservation in the nearb=
y woods.
A nice way to end the paddle.
Enjoy Irene
