Subject: Yellow-breasted Chat and Buff-breasted Sandpiper

I enjoyed a tour of Hartlen Point and the back cove this morning in bright sunshine with no biting insects present. There were at least 120 Ring-billed Gulls and 12 Black-headed Gulls floating and flying on the eastern and western sides of Hartlen Point. The back cove hosted lots of peeps, mostly Least Sandpipers and Semipalmated Sandpipers, with a few White-rumped Sandpipers and one Semipalmated Plover. Small groups of three to four Black-bellied Plovers flew overhead in places. There were also a few Lesser Yellowlegs present.

I met Clarence Stevens Sr. at the back cove and he alerted me to a Yellow-breasted Chat about halfway between the tower gate and the Osprey platform and a Buff-breasted Sandpiper mixing with 10 Black-bellied Plovers on the putting surface near the entrance gate to the golf club. I missed both these birds both coming and going.

A male Ruby-throated Hummingbird and several youngsters remain at our place in Portuguese Cove. As usual they tend to linger until September 6-7.

Hans
