Rob, 

"Irene " went ashore practically across New York City. Plenty of southern seabirds were seen 
from south of Cape Cod southward, and there may be plenty from flooded Vermont and 
upper New York State when the word gets out. Maine got a few Skimmers, and we (NS and 
NB) got several Least Terns and a Royal Tern. Considering the size of the storm and its 
track, I suspect that the few birds that reached us were swept up by the outer strong winds 
on the east side of the storm far to the south and reached us that way. Those associated with 
the center of the storm reached land a lot sooner.

So it appears to be mainly a matter of the storm track and our position relative to it that 
governed the rather small number of storm strays that we received.
