Thanks, Richard. I think it's worth pointing out that, when the tide
is partly or completely out of the Harbour, and this is true also for
the Windsor Causeway, many of the black ducks, mallards, and green-
winged teals often appear to be literally eating and sieving the
intertidal mud. These "yummy muds of Minas", to quote Sherman
Bleakney, are incredibly organically rich with lots of living and
formerly living organisms and their parts, and we can only speculate
on what the puddle-ducks are getting from the mud. But it could
include the single-celled algae called diatoms, which migrate to the
mud surface on every ebbing and low tide, plus polychaete worms, mud
shrimps of all ages and sizes, and who knows what else, including the
decaying old salt-marsh grasses. Food for thought?

Also apparently the small sandpipers can forage for the microscopic
diatoms on the surface, not only in the daytime, but during Moonlit
low tides at night! I hear that the research group at Mt. Allison
Univ., and perhaps also the diatom researchers at St. Mary's Univ.?,
have been studying this over the past decade or more.

Cheers from Jim in Wolfville
