Hello all.
=20
While scouting at Brier this morning (Sept. 10) for next weekend's NSBS o=
uting=2C I was fortunate to get good looks at a Blue-Grey Gnatcatcher=2C mo=
ving with a mixed feeding flock along Gull Rock Road. I waited there from =
about 1115 to 1145=2C as did the birds=2C but no other birders came along t=
o see it. Although it is unlikely to remain there=2C in case anyone wants =
to try for it Sunday=2C it was about 1.3 km past the piles of lobster traps=
=2C or at GPS location (map 19) 710799E=2C 4902393N. =20
=20
Even less likely to be seen again at the same location is a skua=2C Sout=
h Polar from the description=2C seen chasing a gull near North Point early =
this a.m. by Paula Wright=2C a North Carolina birder. Unfortunately=2C lik=
e my gnatcatcher=2C it was a single-person observation. Despite two days o=
f north winds=2C few pelagics came close to shore=2C although Richard Wrigh=
t (Paula's husband) had managed to pick out a distant Manx with some Greate=
r Shearwaters=2C using a scope at the North Light on Friday.
=20
I'm not sure if notices of NSBS outings are still being sent out or not=
=2C but I have not seen one for the Brier Island trip yet=2C and our pre-re=
gistrations are down from last year=2C so this will serve as a reminder. D=
etails are as last year=2C and are on the NSBS website here: http://nsbs.ch=
ebucto.org/trip_show.cgi . As last year=2C if both the major pelagic trip=
s (Brier Island and Mariner) are going out Saturday p.m.=2C we shall have o=
ne leader on each of them. Both provide excellent seabird viewing=2C altho=
ugh unfortunately=2C both are primarily focused on whales. The only chang=
e from the notice is that the registration / orientation / get-acquainted s=
ession before the owling trip Friday evening=2C will occur from 2015-2115 (=
8:15-9:15 p.m. if you like the old format) in the reception room of the lod=
ge=2C not in the parking lot as stated. More details of plans for the week=
end will be discussed then.
Cheers=2C
