Hi Mark & All, Jan 12, 2003
When feeding on berries of flexible shrubs, a Pileated being heavy
has no other choice. The shrub bends and the bird becomes inverted at
~70o. Some years ago I watched one feeding on Alternate-leaved Dogwood
(Cornus alternifolia) berries for 15 minutes or so while I was also
having lunch. It used a slick manoeuvre to get from one cluster of
berries to the next; a backward dive followed almost at once by a climb
to another perch. Slow motion photography would have helped.
Yours truly, Dave Webster, Kentville

Dave's remark below reminds me that the late Merritt Gibson in Canning referred to the interesting sight high in his back-yard trees of a pileated woodpecker acting like a giant chickadee by hanging upside-down while foraging on fruits of Virginia creeper vines. Cheers from Jim in Wolfville

Hi Paul & All, Oct 5, 2011
It is native to the much of eastern USA but widely planted as an ornamental and spreads from cultivation; thus introduced here but native in se Maine.
In good light it has an abundance of flowers and fruits; vigorously worked by Bumble Bees and Pileated Woodpeckers respectively.

Subject: [NatureNS] Virginia Creeper
Hi All
Today I went over to the river to see how high the water came. Real high!
In the woods there is a Virginia Creeper ( Parthenocissus quinquefolia ).
Bright today with the dark skies. The reds to purple were spectular.
There seems to be some variation as to if its a native or introduced.
Roland says introduced but the USDA www site says its native to North Americia.
Does anyone have any thoughts on this?
Have a nice day
Paul
