Use Extreme Caution, Technobabble Alert=20

Reading this could be hazardous to your health

This is a technobabble blurb of interest to some and irrelevant to many. Fr=
om time to time we encounter birds or animals or even flowers that we photo=
graph and want to analyze later for their overall size or other internal di=
mensioning. Cameras are remarkably powerful tools that can be utilized for =
this purpose.

In order to utilize this technique we need to know a few things, firstly th=
e circle of confusion for our camera type. This circle of confusion is a ch=
aracteristic of each camera sensor. You can find this number by googling or=
if your lucky you'll have an optical program that allows you to select it =
by entering your camera type.

The Wikipedia definition of circle of confusion is: In optics a circle of c=
onfusion is an optical spot caused by a cone of light rays from a lens not =
coming to a perfect focus when imaging a point source. It is also known as =
disk of confusion, circle of indistinctness, blur circle, or blur spot.

When in the field you will need to measure the distance from your photograp=
hic location to an object near the critter you are sizing. Alternately, you=
can measure the diameter, length or width of on object nearby the location=
where your critter was located. To ensure accuracy and credibility, photog=
raph your ruler taped or tacked to your object and then photographed.

The accuracy of your sizing depends on your lens type. The more powerful th=
e telephoto lens the more accurate your measurements. For example in my rec=
ent posting on the Eastern Screech-Owl where the bird and nearby trees were=
all in focus at a distance of 105 feet from the photographer my 560mm tele=
photo lens at F5.6 would produce a depth of field of 3 feet(that's all), th=
at is everything beyond 106.5 feet and closer than 103.5 feet would be seve=
rely out of focus. The focus beyond 106.5 feet would rapidly deteriorate so=
that objects beyond about 120 feet would be just fuzzy blurs and objects b=
eyond 150 feet would not exist on the photo as anything but a slight reduct=
ion in brightness, if anything shows at all but a blank background. This na=
rrowing of the field of view is extremely useful. For example if you measur=
e something nearby your critters location, that is flat on to the camera, t=
hen it will become a very accurate ruler. This technique and the use of sim=
ple optical physics eliminates everything outside the 103.5 feet to 106.5 f=
eet depth of field for further consideration. I can provide the formulae fo=
r folks that are interested and you can write your own program on excel or =
other spread sheet program or if your lazy like me I just downloaded a pack=
age that does all the calculations for me including determined hyperfocal d=
istance. The Wikipedia definition of hyperfocal distance is: The hyperfoca=
l distance is the distance beyond which all objects are acceptably sharp, f=
or a lens focused at infinity. In the above sited example of the Eastern Sc=
reech-Owl this distance is 6961 feet. In other words when I focus on infini=
ty all objects that are from 6961 feet from my camera to infinity would be =
reasonably sharp.=20

If there is no readily available object near your critter for developing a =
scale you can still develop a scale on the photo by measuring the camera to=
critter distance and then use your sensor size to determine the apparent f=
rame size using trigonometric calculations. Your can measure sizes directly=
off the screen using a ruler or a program like Gimp 2 that will provide si=
zes in pixels at any angle. You can convert the pixels to inches by the sca=
le you developed for the photo frame, which are simple ratio calculations.

The combination of these techniques allows one to make accurate measurement=
s of your bird or critter such as length, width, distance between eyes, len=
gth of ears or just about anything you want and with high accuracy.
