OCT. 10, 2011 - Two juvenile n. cardinals on the ground foraging
under our Wolfville feeders. Later I saw a male cardinal and a
fledged juvenile at the feeders at the same time, but not
interacting; the juvenile had very little crest and was foraging OK
on its own, as far as I could tell (our blue jays manage to spill a
lot of seeds onto the ground for other birds).

At noon Pat & I drove to Kentville and walked the Miner's Marsh
trails. Immediately we found Richard Stern, who had just seen an
indigo bunting (female or imm.) in a tangle not far from the river
bridge. We saw 1-2 double-crested cormorants (immatures), perhaps 10
mallards, 2 black ducks, 1 green-winged teal, blue jays, and an
uncounted noisy roost of red-winged blackbirds in the cattails -- why
would they be apparently roosting at mid-day and not out foraging? (I
would expect them to come into the cattails at dusk and spend the
night there)? Also we saw 3 unidentified sulphur butterflies,
probably clouded sulphurs? Also the common milkweed plants, which
are abundant not far from the river bridge, showed a lot of open and
opening pods and beautiful silky seeds.

Pat & I checked out Wolfville Harbour at about 1.5 hours after high
tide: a pair of mallards, a single adult ring-billed gull, and only 2
shorebirds seen: a single spotted sandpiper and a single semipalmated
sandpiper, and no yellowlegs of either kind.

Cheers from Jim in Wolfville.
