Yup, there was a wren flipping in and out of a wood pile about ten feet from
me this morning, before disappearing into a tangle of Forsythia. The sun
was behind me, viewing conditions were patchy shade and just bad enough to
frustrate a positive identification. Looked too grey for a winter wren, I
saw no eye ring, but there did seem to be a very faint dark stripe through
the eye. Could not see the belly. Tail-to-body proportion looked wrong for
a winter wren, as well.

Years ago, we had a house wren serenade us for a day in May. Wow! I have
never heard such a small bird sing with that sort of volume! This little
guy just cheeped loudly at me, but was not particularly shy.

About a year later, a winter wren scurried across the walk into the house
and disappeared into a tangle of Solomon's Seal. Very wee and very dark:
unmistakable.

All things considered, I suspect another house wren, but cannot be positive.
