Hi Jim & All, Oct 16, 2011
In my mind, the distinction between protected areas on the one hand =
and the associated negative space on the other hand is blurry.=20
While protected areas are free from the negative effects of highways =
& some other degradations (until some politician decides to unprotect =
them) they are vulnerable to the negative effects of air-pollution and, =
perhaps much worse, effects of climate change. Thus the so-called =
protected areas may be rather unprotected.
This prospect of perhaps major and relative rapid changes in species =
composition lends some urgency to the always desirable objective of good =
biological inventory; to record what is there before it is lost and =
enable clear demonstration that biotic change is taking place.
But one must be realistic about this. There will always be a few =
relatively rare organisms that are missed and these rare species, =
although fun to find, don't make any significant contribution to the =
biological economy of an ecosystem. And as the human economy switches =
into negative growth mode, finding funds for non-essentials will become =
nearly impossible.
So I think the field-work for biological inventory will increasingly =
have to be done by unpaid amateurs. And it need not involve extensive =
travel. Likely half of the population has a species of something new to =
NS within sight of their back door.=20
Now for the bombshell: for even an approximation of complete =
inventory, protected areas must be open to travel by the public by a =
network of ATV trails so the lacunae between trails can be examined =
(probably by amateurs) with less than herculean effort.
Yours truly, Dave Webster

Here is some nice fuel for my feelings that we can never have enough =
truly protected lands (from various forms of development, e.g. roads), =
that these lands and all other potential protected lands must be =
searched by teams of biologists and geologists etc., and that all =
jurisdictions must have authoritative "experts" at museums, =
universities, etc. in order to be able to identify species that are =
found on such surveys of our lands (or know who and where such expertise =
is for sending photos and collected specimens. Cheers from Jim in =
Wolfville.
