Hi Heather & all, Nov 15, 2011
It is unfortunate that anyone would be glad to see industry close down especially one as harmless as gypsum mining. And forestry need not be destructive and usually is not.
Compare the effects of forestry and other industry with the impact of highways, paved parking lots and urban development. This largely urban infrastructure has a huge impact relative to industries like Gypsum mining and forestry.
I recenty read Catch me a Colobus (Gerald Durrell, 1972) and he cites some roadkill figures with reference to Great Britain; 2 million birds per year and in a small area 3,014 hares, 5,377 hedge-hogs, 11,557 rats, 111,728 birds, 32,820 amphibians. A comparable insect count would be astronomical.
Every time a primary industry job is lost in rural NS we move one step closer to all-round genuine hardship and complete disregard of environmental considerations.
Yt, Dave Webster, Kentville

Subject: [NatureNS] Fundy gypsum
Fundy Gypsum is closing down up in the Windsor area.. This was according to an interview heard on CBC this am.That means the threat to the wonderful lands on the Avalon Penn will be saved - for now.
I am all for it but I think those of us who are glad to see industry close down and our land saved need to come up with a replacement industry that is favorable to our land. Economy is what keeps us housed and fed and I always feel so darn sorry for those who lose their jobs.
We all complain about the forestry industry and mining industry and what it does to our natural resources so we should put our collective heads together and come up with some employment solutions.
