This may be a little help Jim . From Familiar Gardenn B Irds Of America, =
by Henry Collins (1965)

"Unlike almost all other species the plumage of the young resembles that =
of the father, not of the mother. Thus a young female has a black =
mustache like the adult male ; but she loses this in her first autumn =
molt."

  Subject: [NatureNS] questions re Flickers

Can anyone help with this: my memory tells me that all juvenile =
yellow-shafted flickers have male-like mustache stripes; is this true?; =
and, if so, when in the fall is it that the juvenile male-like marks =
disappear so that then we can use the usual criteria for male vs. female =
sightings? Any help with this would be appreciated -- I checked Sibley =
and Nat. Geogr. guides before writing this, but my Bent series of life =
histories, with details on molts and plumages, is at Acadia Univ. =
Biology. Cheers from Jim in Wolfville.
