David Sibley has alerted me to two postings earlier on his website on  
distinguishing the two "new" species. Mea culpa, I had overlooked them  
- it seems that, even if our bird were adult, shield shape isn't too  
reliable. His site gives  much better info  for distinguishing the  
species, including subadults - back colour and details of bill colour.  
On both criteria, he has id'd the Red Bridge Pond Bird as American  
from the various posted images.
