The cooperative fishing practices between people of the Imraguen tribe
in the Banc d'Arguin region of Mauritania and schools of dolphins in
catching mullet have been known since at least the 15th century when
they were documented by Portuguese fishermen. There's a short clip of
this cooperative fishing from a Jacques Costeau documentary:

	http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z39XSF21Nc0

The accompanying text says: "For centuries, the Imraguen tribe has
depended on dolphins to push migrating mullet into their nets. With
ancient rituals, they call to the dolphins by simulating the sound of
leaping fish slapping the water. Finally the dolphins come, driving
the mullet before them. Perhaps the dolphins are using the fishermen
to gather a feast for themselves, in a spectacular display of
interspecies cooperation."

I saw the full film in the 1970's presented by a researcher from an
oceanographic institute in Marseille who investigated the phenomenon
which involves at least three species of dolphins that "herd" the
mullet towards the shore where they are encircled by fisherman using
hand nets. Meanwhile the dolphins feed to their heart's content on the
trapped fish - an absolutely fascinating example of human-dolphin
cooperation.

Cheers!

Chris
