*** THIS WEEK'S SKY AT A GLANCE
*
*Some events in the changing sky for Dec 24-31

**VEGA*, the so-called summer star still shine brightly in the northwest
early these evenings.

On Saturday, Dec. 24, look for the Christmas star. On this date every year
you can go out around 9 p.m. and spot the constellation *ORION *well up in
the southeast. Look below it for bright star *SIRIUS*, on the rise. When
Sirius is low, it often twinkles with vivid flashing colours, which show up
especially well in binoculars. All stars do this but Sirius is so bright
that the ffect is especially pronounced.

Also on Saturday, Dec. 24, the *MOON *[Lune] goes into its new phase, which
means that it will rise and set with the sun to leave dark, moonless
nights. Expect higher high tides and lower low tides.

On Saturday, Dec. 24, the *SUN *[Soleil] rose at 8:01 and sets at 16:44. On
Saturday, Dec. 31, the SUN [Soleil] will rise at 8:02 and set at 16:50.

*This Week's Planet Roundup

**MERCURY *[Mercure], at about magnitude -0.3, is now having an excellent
apparition in the dawn, about an hour before sunrise. Look for it low above
the southeast horizon, very far lower left of the Saturn-Spica pair.

*VENUS *[V=E9nus] at magnitude -3.9, shines as the "Evening Star" in the
southwest during twilight. It's getting a little higher each week, on its
way to a grand apparition high in the evening sky this winter and much of
the spring.

*MARS*, at magnitude +0.5, rises around midnight. It's highest in the south
before the first light of dawn, with *REGULUS* now to its right.

*JUPITER*, at magnitude -2.7, blazes high in the southeast after dark and a
little higher in the south around 9 p.m. It sets around 3 a.m.

*SATURN *[Saturne], at magnitude +0.7, rises around 3 a.m. and glows in the
southeast well before dawn. *SPICA*, similar in brightness at magnitude
+1.0 is about 5 or 6 degrees to the right. Brighter *ARCTURUS *shines far
to the their upper left.
