   On Christmas Day I had a great opportunity to observe a large number =
of fresh bear scratchings on youngish hardwoods along the trails in the =
Big Pokiok Nature Park near the community of Pokiok, N.B. Some scratch =
locations were new, whereas elsewhere trees get scratched every year or =
so.=20
   I understand that tree scratchings are territorial markers. There =
seems to be no scent associated with the scratchings, as the two dogs in =
our party were totally oblivious to them. Who does the scratching, the =
males or the females? Or both?=20
