To all naturalists in the Kingston Xmas Bird Count area=2C
=20
  We seem to have again hit one of the worst days in the count period for o=
ur count=2C with the weather ranging from poor to worse=2C because of the 3=
5-50 km/h winds. Most of the feeder reports are not yet in=2C but=2C despi=
te good efforfs by all field parties=2C both numbers and the species total =
were low. At the end of the compiling session=2C we had 44 species=2C and =
2-3 more have been added from reports received since=2C so we are likely to=
 be close to last year's 48=2C the blizzard-reduced lowest since 1993.  =20
=20
   Richard Stern described the amazing wind and wave conditions at the shor=
e=2C as well as two of the rarer species=2C seen there by him and Shirley H=
arris=2C the pair of Harlequins by the wharf=2C and a kittiwake blowing in =
the wind (both 5th occurrences for the count). Alcids may have blown onto =
land=2C as at Truro and Hubbards=2C but none have been found here yet. Ot=
her highlights included a Lapland Longspur (only the 2nd ever on the count)=
 seen at Kingston by the Giffins=2C and our 2nd-ever Turkey Vulture seen by=
 the Colvilles in the Wilmot area. We also had a fifth count record of Red=
-bellied Woodpecker=2C with one report so far of several that have visited =
local feeders in the past month=2C that being the one at Helen Sharp's in M=
argaretsville.
=20
   Some of the absences of regular (A-list) species=2C seen on 90% or more =
of recent counts=2C are equally noteworthy: Long-tailed Duck=2C Pileated Wo=
odpecker=2C and American Tree Sparrow. Other less regular=2C but expected =
species=2C such as Canada Goose=2C Ruffed Grouse=2C any loon or grebe=2C an=
y owl=2C any waxwing=2C blackbirds other than cowbird=2C and Pine Grosbeak=
=2C Purple Finch=2C and Common Redpoll have not put in an appearance=2C unl=
ess in a feeder report to come. =20
=20
   This is where all can help. If you saw or heard (or see or hear) any of=
 these "missed" species or other rarities in the circle on 'Count Week" (26=
 Dec. - 1 Jan. inclusive)=2C please let me know (phone or e-mail) and they =
can be added to the line 'Species seen Count Week but not on Count Day" in=
cluded in each count report=2C that is especially useful to complete the pi=
cture when weather affects count day results. One Count Week rarity=2C an =
Eastern Towhee seen by Pam MacLachlan=2C did not show up for the big day - =
there must be more out there.

    More results will be posted when compiling is complete.

   Cheers=2C
