A f= lock of about 8 -10 Cedar Waxwings came by and went into my holly bush to f= eed on the red berries. It is a decidious holly - an Ilex mixture of some s= ort. Frost is reputed to remove the poison from the berries but the robins = have not taken to it.=0AThe waxwings didn't seem turned off.=0AAbout a doze= n robins were feeding on the red berries on =A0the=A0Japanese barberry ( Be= rberis thunbergii). They had not touched them to the last couple of days. T= his schrub has a reputation of been invasive but the one in my garden is ol= d and doesn't have any children - perhaps it needs another one to make fert= ile seed. Anyway the robins enjoy it.=0AI went to town earlier and saw a Ma= llard drake who lost an argument with a car. I stopped to see if any feathe= r would be good for trout flies and I was not disappointed. The interesting= thing was that it had a silver band. The band had been on the bird so long= it was wore down below the numbers. CWS has a procedure to read the number= s on these bands so I sent it off to them.
