I walked out to the sewer pond here in Port Williams today a little
after four in the afternoon. There were sixteen goldeneyes in the
pond, twenty three mallards, a pair of lesser scaup and the drake
redhead were all resting on the ice.

I haven't seen a ring necked duck here since the fall, but one is
being reported. Could the female scaup be misidentified by me or other
observers?

Ring necked duck females usually have a white ring on the bill, white
ring around the eye and a smudged white patch behind the bill. The
female scaup have no bill ring, no eye ring and a brighter and more
pronounced patch behind the bill. There is also the possibility of a
hybrid.
