Hello all=2C
=20
The two joint NSBS - BNS outings this weekend went well=2C with good weat=
her and excellent views of birds. The attempt to convert one very long day=
(8-9 hours +) with long caravans of cars into two shorter ones (6-7 hours =
each) with more manageable numbers proved quite successful=2C although we s=
till did not have time to visit all sites that we had hoped to=2C and could=
stop only briefly at others. The number of vehicles and observers per tri=
p did go down=2C perhaps more than we would have liked=2C but making an enj=
oyable experience for both participants and leaders without logistical prob=
lems. Keeping in mind Harrison Lewis' dictum that the ideal number for a b=
irding outing is two persons=2C perhaps we should not be too concerned abou=
t that.=20
=20
The combined number of species was a little higher than for the single tr=
ips of the past two springs (55 species versus 51-52) and this year all obs=
ervers were able to get good looks at nearly every species. Thirty-two spe=
cies were common to both trips=2C including a Turkey Vulture over the Mount=
ain at Morden Saturday (March 24) and one over the Belleisle Marsh on Sunda=
y (March 25)=2C and Northern Cardinals singing at several locations. Nine =
additional species were seen on the Kings West-Margaretsville trip Saturday=
and 14 more on the Annapolis County one on Sunday=2C for totals of 41 and =
46 respectively. =20
=20
Waterfowl were highlights both days=2C with 17 species observed in total=
=3B only one=2C a pair of Hooded Mergansers at the Andrews Brook marsh in w=
est Margaretsville=2C was seen Saturday but not Sunday. The wind and sea w=
ere almost calm Sunday=2C making observation much easier=2C and all the reg=
ular sea ducks could be seen along the shore in courtship=2C most with 4-5 =
males displaying to one female=2C including about 12 Harlequins at Port Ge=
orge. The best spots for freshwater ducks were the Belleisle and Annapolis=
Royal marshes=2C with most of the dabblers already paired=2C and mainly th=
e males of the divers back by now. Highlights of these were 60+ Ring-necke=
ds (mainly at Belleisle) and about 100 Buffleheads (most at Annapolis). Ga=
dwalls=2C American Wigeons=2C Green-winged Teal=2C and Northern Shovelers=
=2C were notable among the dabblers. =20
=20
Other highligts included: Saturday - 5 Purple Sandpipers at Margaretsvil=
le=2C a Black Guillemot at Morden=2C two Brown Creepers (brought in for gre=
at looks by Richard Stern) at Stronach Park=2C Kingston=2C a very early Chi=
pping Sparrow at Victoria Vale=2C an American Kestrel at Spa Springs and a =
Merlin at North Kingston=3B and=2C on Sunday=2C our first Northern Harrier =
(a male at Bridgetown)=2C a Ring-billed Gull at Port George=2C and a Red-th=
roated Loon at Hampton=2C as well as 9 species of ducks not identified Sat=
urday.
Cheers=2C
