Just back from a very hot winter in Florida.
A couple of nature highlights were the numbers of Manatees in our little
Marina off the Indian River. Up to 15 at times, both young and old and lots
of mating which is about the only time they get really frisky.
Another strange highlight was a visit to the St Lucie County landfill with
a friend who is a volunteer driver of the garbage truck in our park. He
had told me about the birds but it really had to be seen to be believed.
Literally thousands of birds. Vultures, egrets, ibis, wood storks and some
gulls and crows. Driving into a building to discharge our load we were
followed by an army of egrets and ibis who immediately surrounded us. It was
literally necessary to push them away so that we could work.
Good to be back home and to be greeted by robins on the lawn.
