Hi Paul,

They are definitely beetle larvae of the so-called "scarabaeoid
type" (i.e., similar to scarab beetles). Due to their abundance and
size, I favour June beetles (Phyllophaga sp. or Serica sp.) but it
could also be something similar such as a lucanid (stag beetle) larva
(Ceruchus piceus or Platycerus sp.), June beetle larvae are
rhizophagous feeding on the roots of grasses and hence are abundant in
fields. Lunacid larvae are saproxylic and are found in decaying wood
(i.e., normally in forests). I'm expect that the Kestrel is foraging
for food in fields and hence June beetle larvae are also good
prospects in terms of habitat.

If you can find and collect one of these larvae I'd be interested in
seeing and identifying it. It's interesting information in relation to
Kestrel diets.

Cheers!

Chris
