I agree with Lance; Nikon also has excellent models that will fill the bill=
.

Whichever model you decide upon, be sure you check that the minimum
interpupillary distance is suitable for an 8 year old. Even the most
expensive binocular will be totally useless if it cannot be adjusted to the
interpupillary distance of the user!
