Week's Sky at a Glance Some celestial sights for April 13 =96 21

On Friday, April 13, the *moon *went into its Last-quarter Phase meaning it
rose at midnight and set at noon.

This is the time of year when the dim *Little Dipper* juts to the right
from Polaris (its handle-end) at nightfall. The much brighter *Big Dipper* =
*
* curls over high above it, "dumping water" straight down into it.

On Saturday, April 21, the *moon* will go into its New Phase meaning it
will rise and set with the sun to make for dark nights. Expect higher high
tides and lower low tides.

On Saturday, April 14, the *sun* rose at 6:39 a.m. and sets at 8:08 p.m. On
Saturday, April 21, the sun will rise at 6:22 a.m. and set at 8:15 p.m.

*This Week's Planet Roundup*

*Mercury* (magnitude +0.4) is deep in the glow of sunrise.

*Venus *(magnitude =964.6) is shining the highest and brightest it ever
appears in the evening sky during its 8-year cycle. Venus comes into easy
view high in the west soon after sunset. It doesn't set in the northwest
until around midnight. Far below Venus in twilight is Jupiter.

*Mars* (magnitude =960.4) shines fire-orange in the southeast in early
evening. Regulus is 4=B0 to Mars's right in early evening.

*Jupiter* (magnitude =962.0) is sinking ever lower toward the sunset, far
below Venus. Jupiter appears increasingly fuzzy at its ever-lower altitude.

*Saturn* (magnitude +0.2) is at opposition this week. It rises in twilight
and glows highest in the south around 2 a.m. Shining 5=B0 to its right is
Spica: fainter and bluer. Saturn=92s rings are very visible in a birding
scope on clear nights.
