Paul, no location given? and no description of the calls heard?? I
presume you know about the high loud notes made by Spring Peepers?
Besides them in early Spring, and sometimes before the Peepers, you
might have been hearing the chuckling notes or clacking notes of Wood
Frogs? You should be able to check the Internet by Googling their
names or by typing herpatlas or herpetological atlas or trying the
nsmuseumofnaturalhistory or gov.ns.ca/naturalresources Web sites.
Then you should be able to access the calls of our various species
and then let us know which ones match your memory. Leopard frogs
sound like snoring or like a distant outboard motor. Toads have long
high trills on one pitch. Mink frogs and green frogs and bull frogs
will not be calling until well into May or even June in most places,
and these last three species breed in Summer, rather than Spring.

Let us all know what you find out, or if you can respond to what I
have written here.

Cheers from Jim in Wolfville.
