Pond, Jollimore HRM=0A =0A=0A=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0 I seized an hour at l=
unchtime today to go for a walk around=0Athe Frog Pond in Fleming Park, Jol=
limore, HRM.=A0 The sun was warm=0Abehind the high cloud cover, and winds w=
ere light.=A0 Later the sun=0Acame out and it must have reached +15.=A0 Lot=
s of birds were singing=0Ain the neighbourhood around the park: Robins, Son=
g Sparrows, Dark-eyed=0AJuncos, Goldfinches, and Black-capped Chickadees ha=
ve all been present=0Aand singing for awhile now.=A0 I was delighted to hea=
r a Cardinal=0Asinging, from the Parkhill Road side of the pond.=A0 I know =
they are=0Ain that neighbourhood and it was probably in a backyard there: I=
have=0Anever seen one in Fleming Park itself.=A0 But I was most hoping to =
see=0Asome new arrivals, and was not disappointed.=0A=0A=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=
=A0=A0 There were=0Amore than 20 Yellow-rumped Warblers singing and flycatc=
hing in the bare=0Atrees.=A0 All were males, and very quick to respond to m=
y=0Apishing.=A0 I also saw and heard 2 or 3 tail-bobbing Palm=0AWarblers.=
=A0 Other migrants included a singing Ruby-crowned Kinglet, a=0Alone Common=
Grackle, and two Northern Flickers.=A0 White-throated=0ASparrows were scar=
ce in HRM this winter, though some may have stayed near=0Afeeders in garden=
s.=A0 However today I heard their lovely song, and=0Asaw one in the woods, =
scuffling about in the fallen leaves, the first I=0Ahave seen this year.=0A=
=0A=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0 Water=0Alevels were low in the marshy areas, as=
I would expect after such a dry=0Astart to the spring.=A0 There were no ve=
rnal pools in the woods.=A0=0AHalf a dozen Painted Turtles were out sunbath=
ing on the rocks in the=0Apond.=A0 There were no new arrivals on the water;=
I had hoped for a=0AGreat Blue Heron or Ring-necked Ducks, but there were =
none.=A0=A0 I=0Asaw no signs of Beavers - they were absent from the pond fo=
r the last two=0Ayears, I believe.=0A=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=0A=A0=A0=A0=
=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0 Sweet Gale=0Awas shedding pollen, and Red Maples and Mayflo=
wers were in full=0Abloom.=A0 Coltsfoot was abundant and the flowers well a=
dvanced; some=0Awere nearly over.=A0 American Fly-honeysuckle and Leatherle=
af had fat=0Aflower buds, but none were in bloom yet.=A0 There were lots of=
flying=0Ainsects about, including some bees and winter moths, and tiny, no=
n-biting=0Agnats.=A0 It was a lovely time to be out for a walk.=0A=0A=A0=A0=
