Good Day,
Just a brief note to thank Richard Stern for leading us on a very =
productive although rather cool and breezy field trip pond-hopping, etc. =
in the Wolfville/Kentville area on Sat. Also thanks to Liz Stern for =
the hospitality she showed to a bunch of muddy-booted birders! Sorry =
about that, Liz!
It was great to view Richard's and Paul's images, especially of the =
Barred Owls in Bernard's backyard. Bernard certainly knows their =
behaviour! Thanks, Bernard!
After the field trip was over, and Suzanne and I were able to warm up =
over coffees at Just Us, we stopped to take a look over the Windsor =
Sewage Lagoon. There, we were able to add several species to the day's =
tally. Perhaps most remarkable was the number of Tree Swallows flying =
over the second pond, further from the road. Although it was a =
challenge to do a proper count, counting by 10's, I "guesstimated" about =
250 swallows in all, with about 1 in 10 being a Barn Swallow. Also in =
the second pond were a few Ring-necked Ducks, and both American and =
Eurasian Wigeon. A presumed pair of Killdeer were on the gravel =
driveway. Finally, we quickly scanned the gulls roosting on the grassy =
area between the ponds, expecting only the usual 3 suspects. However, =
there was a 4th - a Lesser Black-backed Gull, obviously smaller and not =
nearly as dark as the nearby GBBG's, finally stood up to show us its =
yellow legs! I was able to get poor but documentary pics for the =
record.
Bring on the migration.... The only warbler species I've seen so far in =
2012 (in NS) is Yellow-rumped!
Cheers,
Bob McDonald

Subject: Re: [NatureNS] Today's NSBS and BNS Field trip photos
Hi everyone:
If I hadn't been trying to get the lawns/gardens done on Saturday =
before going on a brief vacation, I would have loved to have made this =
trip, especially if an indigo bunting was spotted, as I have never seen =
one, and appear to be the only birder in the province in that category! =
LOL
