Thanks Paul. I feel you & Dave have both pointed me in the right
direction: "Anyway my guess would be this was a male who for some
reason had come out of hibernation early and decided to go back after
a spell, found a nice spot and had a sleep." It all adds up (including
the clear cut, perhaps).
