--------------------------------

May 11, 2012 - Yesterday was an intermittently rainy day, and Susan
Hauer told me she was hearing chimney swifts every time she was
outside in Wolfville. I told her that rainy misty weather often
brings the swifts down to low altitudes where they are easy to hear
and see in the daytime.

Today was cloudy but with lots of Sunny breaks, and I went into
downtown Wolfville at dusk to check for roosting chimney swifts at
the Robie Tufts Nature Centre (RTNC). The nice Sunset was at about
8:31 p.m., which is when I arrived there. The "show" was all over by
8:40 p.m., by which time about 65+ swifts had dived into the chimney,
which was refurbished and repointed just in early winter of 2010-2011.

I am always pleased as punch to see my first chimney swifts of the
year, especially since they are apparently declining very rapidly at
about 8% per year! and they obviously need us humans to see what we
can do to help them. And of course they have just arrived from
Amazonia in northeast South America. Very probably most of them are
still migrating northward, and they generally nest quite late,
starting in about mid-June and then requiring a couple of months to
complete the cycle of nest-building, hatching, and raising the
youngsters to fledging and then to independence.

Temperature was 14 C. according to my car, and after the show the sky
got heavily and darkly overcast. There was essentially no wind.

Cheers from Jim in Wolfville.
