H.S. chimney - Claire Diggins. - May 15/12 - 68+ at dusk, Wolfville, RTNC - Tony Napoli, Jim Wolford. - May 17/12 - 37+ at dusk, Wolfville RTNC, + merlin seen - Jim Wolford et al. - May 17/12 - 10+ flying about in Falmouth area (Mines Rd.) - Ryan Harvey. --------------------------------------- MAY 17, 2012 - At dusk I monitored Wolfville's Robie Tufts Nature Centre for roosting swifts -- the "show" this evening was quite boring and very gradual, with a total of only 37+ chimney swifts going into the chimney, from 8:45 to 9:10 p.m. -- Sunset was at 8:37, and I watched from 8:42 to 9:15 p.m. -- sky was totally clear, wind was light to moderate and cool, at 16 C. I was the lone observer, but various others saw parts of the show: Donna Holmes, Tony Napoli, Tom? Reimer, Glenys Gibson, Sheila McCurdy, Liz Adamson, et al. Very shortly after my vigil started, three swifts went into the chimney; thus a few more may very well have been missed. But early in tonight's "show", at 8:47 p.m., I saw a merlin fly past the chimney very rapidly and closely without any slowing down, and it continued northward toward the dykelands. (In recent years I don't think anyone has seen attacks on the pre-roosting swifts by merlins, and tonight's pattern of a merlin flying northward past the chimney has been seen by me several times in past years.
