JUNE 4, 2012 - Evening at Robie Tufts Nature Centre in Wolfville: I
arrived at 8:07 p.m. (Sunset 8:54 p.m.) and I sat in my car watching
the chimney until 9:00 p.m. Sky was overcast (but not dark),
temperature was very cool at 10 C., and a fairly strong wind was
blowing (direction not noted). I saw only a single chimney swift,
which made two passes close by the chimney at about 8:10 p.m. but was
not seen to go in. I strongly suspect that the vast majority of
swifts present went into the chimney well before I got there. Thus I
have to record zero swifts for tonight.

I will try to do a roosting count tomorrow night, since I will be
unavailable the next night.

JUNE 5, 2012 - Today at the RTNC chimney I discovered that someone
was there at the right time yesterday afternoon, and counted 85
chimney swifts diving in from 5:05 to 5:30 p.m. Overcast, cool,
strong breeze from the east. Observer TL_??

Again at dusk I sat and watched Wolfville's RTNC chimney from 8:11 to
8:35 p.m. (Sunset 8:55) but saw no chimney swifts at all. Tonight
was again overcast (but good visibility) and quite cool, 10 C., and
very windy from the north (but no rain this evening), and I strongly
suspect that whatever swifts were nearby went into the chimney long
before my short vigil.

JUNE 6, 2012 - In similar weather conditions as on June 4&5/12,
including drizzling, but with less wind (light breeze), and overcast
and cool, at 3:55 p.m. I happened to walk past Wolfville' RTNC
swifts' chimney and saw a single chimney swift drop down vertically
into the chimney. I wonder how many other swifts were already inside
the chimney. On days like this I imagine that swifts come and go
intermittently on attempts to forage, but I'll bet that northward
migration is still going on.

Weather has not allowed any dusk counts for a few days, but on June
4th someone (TL_??) counted 85 ch. swifts diving into the RTNC
chimney from 5:05 to 5:30 p.m. in overcast, intermittently drizzly,
windy, cool conditions. THANKS! to whomever/whoever? signed our
provided sheet for documentation.

Cheers from Jim in Wolfville.
