Hi JS & All, June 8, 2012
Your vivid description of this bird reminds me of an apparently =
similar attack on Alison about 25 years ago as described in my e-mail of =
2007 (pasted below). At the time we guessed Goshawk and probably =
discounted Perigrine as being absent or very rare. Now I have second =
thoughts. This was in woodland but probably within 200 paces of basalt =
cliffs (west of Black Rock ?).

Hi Heather & All, June 23, 2007
Is this a definite Peregrine or might it have been a Goshawk ?

About 20 years ago my wife was attacked by (as I recall) a Goshawk=20
in a series of very impressive maneuvers. This was in mostly deciduous=20
woodland, a lot of kak-kak-kaking and reminiscent of the cropduster=20
scene in North by Northwest, i.e. climb up, turn sharply, dive, fly=20
straight at the target (wife's head) at eye level and bank away a last=20
instant.

This continued while we walked about 50-100 paces along the woods=20
road. I was a few feet away all the time but it consistently picked on=20
Alison.

Subject: [NatureNS] Strafed by a Pergrine Falcon

Profusion of ticks having driven us from eastern valley woods and =
fields, Mr Burns and I have been taking our constitutionals along =
various shorelines in the area.=20

While walking on the Minas Basin shore at low tide this AM under the =
towering blue black cliffs between Hantsport and L.A. (Lower Avonport) I =
was startled out of a profound reverie ('what's for lunch?') by a sudden =
loud and repeated thumping and a repeated guttural and angry =
'ack-ack-ack' cry about 2' over my head, accompanied by the sudden =
appearance of a large dark rapidly moving shadow on the ground directly =
in front of me and heading in my direction. Scared the bejeebers out of =
me, no word.=20

Recovering from the shock, I looked up as a beautiful and PO'ed =
Peregrine Falcon pulled out his power dive at my head and commenced =
hovering about 40' above us, all the while guffing us angrily. As I =
stumbled along, alternately looking up fearfully in self defence and =
down to try and pick a path in the rubble and boulders on the shore, the =
PF repeatedly strafed Mr Burns in low level dives.=20

Interestingly as the PF escorted us out of his territory he was in =
turn attacked by tiny fearless (or brainless) American Goldfinches who =
rose out of the greenery along the cliff edge to contest possession of =
the immediate airspace as the PF passed by.=20

All the while regretting the abscence of my phone. And why no phone =
one might ask? Because yesterday, while Mr Burns and I were contesting =
the possession of a particularly desireable stick, my phone fell out of =
my pocket, unknown to me, and onto a stretch of beach 50m wide, 3km =
long, and COVERED with millions of small, rectangular, black shale rocks =
the excact size and shape of my phone. On a making tide, no less. Anyway =
I eventually found it after two hours searching, and decided today to =
leave it at home. Brilliant move.=20

Anyway a beautiful day and an interesting experience.=20

  Cheers=20
