Hi Paul, July 29, 2012
It is no doubt included in the Noxious Weed Act. But some don't =
consider the Weed Act to be noxious.

I understand that, in exceptional circumstances, H. perforatum can =
be toxic to livestock but I don't recall any local problems with it. On =
the other hand I know of problems when livestock broke into a stand of =
green Oats.=20

A beetle was introduced (Chrysolina hyperici ?) to control it.

Subject: [NatureNS] Common St Johns Wort

  Hi All
This evening we went to the Owl Night at Graves Island Prov. Park, =
Lunenburg Co.
with Dr. Soren Bondrup-Nielsen. A very nice presentation even if =
electricity might have eased the strain
  on Dr Soren.
When we came out I noticed a large rough area of yellow flowers. I am =
not very familiar with them
and rarely visit Graves Island except in winter when they are not in =
bloom.
They look like Common St Johns wort Hypericum perforatum, with the =
black spots on the petal and
the translucent dots on the leaves.
When I looked it up in Google, the Nova Scotia Museum www site on =
poison plants has it among the=20
vilians. Perhaps not unusual for this site to over react on the =
dangers of some plants
but other www sites agree with them.
The interesting thing is that it was growing profusely in a provincial =
park with lots of=20
innocent folks tramping around. No livestock there so that was not a =
danger.
One would think if one Government department said something was =
dangerous, other departments
would take some simple steps to eliminate the danger. Or do I not =
understand government?
Anyone have any thoughts on this?
Enjoy the summer - I am!
  Paul=20
